Join us in this 2-hour storytelling walk to uncover the full and surprising picture of diverse LGBT+ lives in 5 centuries of Amsterdam's LGBT+ history.

The Netherlands is the first country in the world to legalize gay marriage, and four couples were married by the Mayor of Amsterdam at that pioneering moment.

However, the city’s LGBT+ history traces back to the medieval ages. We will get insights into the whole long LGBT+ history. And hear about the important role of the LGBT+ people in the development of Amsterdam.

The walk covers both sad stories and inspirational and hopeful stories. Together, they will give you a sense of the full breadth of LGBT+ history in the city.

Notable sights/stories include:
  • 17th-century theater and its playwrights’ lesbian love triangle
  • Home of “Pope of the Gays” and the loss that created a leader
  • 18th-century hidden church and a trans man who worshiped there
  • City Hall and the world’s first gay marriage
