Begin your Madrid food tour with freshly fried churros and homemade Spanish hot chocolate at a café that many Madrilenos are unaware of. As you eat, you’ll discover why not all churros are created equal and how to navigate Spain’s typically challenging eating schedule.
Following that, we will meet the young entrepreneurs behind a historic, natural bakery in Madrid that is redefining the history of bread. We’ll sample the traditional snack and pick up a loaf to go.
Now it’s time to go to one of Madrid’s historic markets, where locals still come every morning to get ingredients for the day’s lunch. Today, you’ll be one of those shoppers as we visit our friends who work here and sample their products, which range from cured ham to olives to seasonal fruit.
We will visit a specialty deli that has been open since the 1930s, where the current owner’s grandfather had secret meetings to strategize against the Spanish Civil War. We will enjoy a gourmet cheese and wine tasting in the same room where the current owner’s grandfather had secret meetings.
Next, we’ll take our food tour into Madrid’s historic center to a restaurant that’s so famous among residents that reservations are nearly hard to come by. Fortunately, our table is already reserved. You’ll learn more about tapas culture in Madrid while you eat two varieties of crispy-yet-creamy croquetas and drink an ice-cold beer.
After that, we’re headed to the only tapas place near Plaza Mayor that is always packed with locals. You’ll get to eat Madrid’s most popular street food here: the city’s iconic fried calamari sandwich!
And, because we can’t leave without something sweet, we’ll stop by a historic pastry shop just down the street for one last bite.
